Michael WhiteLUDLOW, MA –  New York Times Notable author, Michael White, will be the featured speaker at the February 13, 2012 dinner meeting of the Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley at the Ludlow Country Club. He will share his experience on researching and writing Beautiful Assassin - a  breathtaking tale of love, loyalty, and intrigue set in the early days of World War II. As the beleaguered Soviets struggle to hold back the rising German tide at Sevastopol, a fearless female sniper inspires hope during her nation's darkest hour. Word of the extraordinary Soviet heroine, Tat'yana Levchenko, reaches American First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who invites the beautiful assassin to tour the United States with her. For the Russians, Tat'yana's visit is an opportunity to gain support and valuable U.S. intelligence. But Tat'yana knows she is a pawn in a deadly game of treachery and deceit, forced to question the motivations of everyone around her . . . even the dashing and sympathetic American captain assigned as her translator. And then, as suddenly as she rose to international fame, Tat'yana vanishes without a trace.

Michael joined us in 2011 to talk about his novel the Soul Catcher.  He was a most interesting and entertaining speaker!

Women Veterans Get Deserving Celebration

E-mail Print PDF

We are very proud to be working with a group of women veterans staying in a transitional housing program at the Northampton Veterans Administration Leeds, MA campus. The women live in a duplex cottage which houses 12 women, in two double bedrooms and eight single bedrooms. In December, we visited the program with lots of gifts, including gently worn winter coats, scarves, handmade quilts, jewelry, and handmade Christmas stockings filled with practical items for each woman.  In return we were treated to home made sweets and great company!

Senator Gale Candaras talks about Trafficking of Women and Girls

Several members of the Quaboag Club visited the Zonta Club of Springfield on Janaury 17, 2012 to hear Sate Senator Gale D. Candaras discuss human trafficking law in Massachusetts.  Excellent meeting. Eye opening news.

Human Trafficking Initiative

Because of the nature of the crime, there is no sound methodology to measure the problem; however, experts estimate that 27 million people are trafficked internationally and domestically bringing in $32 billion dollars annually. It is the second largest and fastest growing black market.

Nationally an estimated 17,500 foreign nationals are trafficked into this country every year. Within this country, approximately 1.7 million new runaways/throwaways enter street life every year.

Human trafficking has been reported in all 50 states and is a crime under US and international law.

On January 20, 2011, along with a coalition of legislators, law enforcement, and advocates, including lead sponsors Senator Mark Montigny and House Judiciary Chairman Eugene O'Flaherty, Attorney General Coakley filed "An Act Relative to the Commercial Exploitation of People".

On November 21, 2011, Governor Patrick signed this legislation into law, H. 3808, “An Act Relative to the Commercial Exploitation of People,” This law goes into effect February 19th, 2012.

The Attorney General's office is currently working on ways to increase awareness about the issue, disseminate best practices information, and identify and assist victims through a cross-divisional Human Trafficking Strike Force.
