Conference 2008

Fall Conference 2007

BEACON OF LIGHT Zonta’s Service / Advocacy District I Fall Conference
 So. Portland, ME

Exactly one hundred Zontians and guests attended the 2007 Fall Conference last weekend, and judging by the evaluations turned in, the conference was a huge success. A report on the conference will be published in the next District Newsletter; in the meantime, here are a few comments from some of the attendees from the Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley.

Liz Reeves:
Wow ! What a great weekend! It has been a number of years since I have been to a District Conference and the first time as a delegate. Being a delegate opened my eyes a bit more to how the district works. I am always impressed by how we are surrounded by so many bright, capable women. It is truly energizing. The York and Bangor Clubs did an outstanding job of organizing the conference. If I have to pick one of the many highlights of the conference for me, I would say that it was getting to know other members better (including Quaboag members) as well as getting plenty of business done. I suppose that is a Zontian for you!

P.S. Chris Gerl will be receiving some changes on the Rules of Procedure for the District that each of the clubs need to vote on . The District budget was reviewed and accepted with a vote.

Marge Cavanaugh:
I have been thinking about the Fall Conference and what I enjoyed the most. Can’t pinpoint one thing. Guess it was the whole Fall Conference. Hearing Jean Corbin Thomas from New Zealand talk about UNIFEM makes you realize how much good ZONTA does world wide. Mayor Larry Gilbert made us more aware of trafficking and what we can do about it. Each speaker motivated and informed. Of course, being directly across from the Maine Mall was a plus as well. I have been going to Fall Conference for a number of years and the best part has always been being with my sister Zontians. They are remarkable and that has not changed since my first Conference.

Deb Allen:
South Portland was my last fall conference as District 1 Treasurer. It has been a great experience getting to know and work with Zontians from other clubs and areas.
For me the highlight of this conference was meeting and talking to our International Rep Bonnie Schumacher. I was rejuvenated by her enthusiasm and passion. She had many fantastic ideas for membership
/recruitment. I plan to pick her brain some more by email!

Mary Knight:
“Zonta International condemns the practice of trafficking in persons, especially women and girls, for sexual or labor exploitation as a gross violation of human rights and a crime against humanity. “ When we think about this position statement, many of us don’t picture trafficking being prevalent in the United States. Laurent Gilbert, mayor for the City of Lewiston, Maine, made us realize that modern day slavery is in fact a thriving business even in Maine! He shared information from the US Department of Justice and local law enforcement agencies outlining strategies for protecting trafficking victims and prosecuting traffickers.

The 2006-2008 District 1 Board—headed by Governor Lynn Goodhue—will complete its term in May 2008. We are proud to have three Quaboag Valley members on this board: Kris Gould—Secretary, Deb Allen—Treasurer, and Dr. Mary Ann Rubis—Area II Director. At the Fall Conference, the 2008-2010 Board was elected and we are proud to announce that the new District I Lt. Governor will be Dr. Mary Ann Rubis!! Serving on a District Board requires a lot of time, energy, personal cost and sacrifice. Kudos to all Zonta members who have stepped up to the plate. We thank the 2006-2008 Board and we pledge 110% support to Governor Nadine Salley and Mary Ann for their leadership in the next biennium.
